We understand the importance of access for all, so we have taken measures to ensure all of our visitors enjoy a great day with us whatever their ability.

There are access ramps or lifts to all our visitor facilities.

A “smoothway” provides a smoother alternative to the cobbles for wheelchairs and buggies.

Wheelchairs are available for hire from 10am until 4pm for a £10 deposit which is refunded when the wheelchair is returned. If you would like to book a wheelchair in advance, please contact us the day before you visit to check availability.

There are disabled toilets located at the Red Lion Pub, Assembly Rooms and at the Wakebridge Tram Stop.

We do not have a changing places toilet, but for changing of older children and adults, please ask staff for access to the First Aid hut.

We are very sorry, but our Access Tram (suitable for wheelchair users) has been retired and is not available for the 2025 season. We are currently fundraising to restore a new Access Tram. If you would like to help us raise funds for this worthy cause, please see our donations page.

Access Tram 2

We’re launching our appeal for a new Access Tram for Crich Tramway Village, following the decision to retire the small Access Tram, suitable for wheelchair users, which has served us so well over many years.

Built in the 1980s as one of Blackpool’s last ‘old generation’ trams, Centenary type tram 645 was generously donated by Blackpool Transport Services and tramway member Peter Whiteley. As a worthy successor to ‘Erich’, 645 has many strengths – not least its robust construction, to take a centre lift capable of taking heavy wheelchairs, lots of seats, and one-person operation.

It needs a lot of work to get it into working order as ‘Access Tram 2’, but when finished it will be in regular operation at our museum, with capacity for families and large groups to ride together (unlike its smaller predecessor). We are now determined to carry out this project over a 12 month window, but we need to raise £120,000 to carry out:

full refurbishment, including reinstatement of electronics
installation of a special heavy duty wheelchair lift
fitting out with new features for visitors with various access needs (Crich Tramway Village is very popular with over a sixth of our visitors self-recording as disabled or less able).

We know we can match fund and obtain some parts we need at cost or cut prices – and our volunteer team is keen to get to work as soon as possible. We’re looking for other project sponsors and partners, but you can help now, by making a donation.  We’re also excited to announce our new partnership with the Derby Community Lottery, meaning you can support this fundraiser and at the same time have a chance to win cash prizes! See Derby Community Lottery. Please help us spread the word!
