Tram Driving Experience

UTDE candidate- right with Instructor Bill Wicks

Drive a Vintage Tram

Ever dreamed of taking the controls of a real vintage tram? This unforgettable tram driving experience puts you behind the wheel of a beautifully restored heritage tramcar — navigating a mile of scenic Derbyshire track, complete with hills, points, and authentic tram stops.

What's Included in Your Tram Driving Day

Your experience begins with a warm welcome from our expert instructors over refreshments at the Museum. During the morning, you’ll get a full briefing on tram driving techniques and safety before stepping aboard one of our stunning vintage trams for the real thing.

With your instructor and guard by your side, you’ll take the controls and drive the full route — tackling points, tram stops, and the rolling Derbyshire countryside. Most drivers complete at least four round trips, giving you plenty of time to build confidence and soak in the experience. You’ll also get the chance to try your hand at authentic guard duties on the back platform, including trolley turning, bell signals, and changing points.

Family and friends are welcome to ride along and enjoy every moment from the passenger seats.

The day wraps up as you return the tram to the depot for a final debrief over refreshments. And once you’ve mastered the airbrake course, why not come back for the handbrake tram driving course and expand your skills with a different type of heritage tramcar?

When Do Tram Driving Experiences Run?

Our Ultimate Tram Driving Experiences take place on Fridays during spring and autumn, when the Museum is closed to the public — meaning you get the track to yourself. The museum exhibitions remain open for you to explore, and every participant receives a complimentary gift voucher to return with a guest on a future public opening day.

The cost is £440.
