The Modern British Tramcar Journey – Special Event

When: Fri 11th September (6:30 pm) – ()

Back to the future – the modern British Tramcar journey since the 80’s

Explore the remarkable story of the modern British tramcar at the National Tramway Museum.

The museum is pleased to welcome David Leeder on Friday 11 September as our guest speaker for the Annual Geoffrey Claydon Memorial Lecture.

David is a renowned public speaker and commentator on transport history, having been at the heart of passenger transport management and planning since before the turn of the century.

His talk is a timely look back at the first flowering of ‘reborn’ tramway systems in this country after 50 years, starting with the Tyne and Wear Metro (1970s), the Docklands Light Railway (1980s) and the Midland Metro (with which he was personally involved).  David is a senior transport planner, having been CEO of the largest UK bus network outside of London, Chair of the company that built the Midland Metro, as well as an advisor to the government.

There’s a host of intriguing questions he will be covering;

  • why are UK trams so expensive?
  • why is UK tram patronage such a mixed picture?
  • have trams / light rail been installed on the right routes?

You can get a flavour of David’s work through the Friends of London Transport Museum You Tube channel.

The talk takes place in the newly refurbished Poulson Room above the Red Lion pub (which will be open for the event).  Doors open at 18.30, and tickets are available in advance for £5 through bit.ly/ModernTramcarJourney
